Reutealis trisperma (Kemiri Sunan)

 [Reutealis Trisperma (Blanco) Airy Shaw] is an indegenous plant of the tropics, especially in south east asia spread out in Philippines and Indonesia. In West Java, it is found growing at 100 to 1000 m above sea level. It grows as a pole, height can reach  more than 15 m with taproot,  yield harvest in 4 years, lives until more than 50 and have a tight , thick and wide canopy which can absorb air pollution and carbone dioxide.  Optimal climatic conditions  for growth is at temperature between 18.7 to 26.2 C and pH 5.4 to 7.1 and the latitude of less then 700 m.

Since this plant has long been considered as one of other potential biodiesel energy sources, Our Company,  PT Bahtera Hijau Lestari Indonesia (PT BHLI) and  ( Balai Penelitian Tanaman Rempah dan Aneka Tanaman Industri – BALITTRI / Indonesia Spice and Industrial Crops Research Institute, ISICRI), Ministry of Aghriculture ( MOA), have made Joint Agreement for further research sice April 2009.

The first step had been done to save the potential genetic material of this plant by  variety registry to Center  For Plant Variety Protection, MOA, dated May 25, 2009, and the registered name of this plant is legally said  Kemiri Sunan as stated in it’s  Local Variety  Sertificate.

Kemiri Sunan is ready to harvest after 4 years and it yields at least 25 kg dry seeds/tree at the first year of production and increasing up to 200-300 kg/tree/year in 8 year and after. Based on our researches, with it’s oil content in the seeds about 45 to 56 %f and  the population of plants 150 trees / ha, with an average production of 250 kg seeds / tree / year, we can get 25 tons of dry seeds, equivalent to about  10 tons of Kemiri Sunan.Crude Oil and the remaining solid waste can be used as an ingredient for making briquettes, biogas, fertilizers and animal feed and many other by products.

 Kemiri Sunan Crude  Oil containes chemical  compositions of 10% palmitic acid, 9% stearic acid, oleic acid 12%, linoleic acid 19% and eleostearic acid 51% which is toxic, so it can not be consumed. The dominant fatty acid content of Kemiri Reutealis Sunan is eleostearic acid that can be processed into an anti-carsinogenic substance, which is very useful for the pharmaceutical purposes.

In addition , the  solid waste of  crude oil processed contains Nitrogen 6%, Potassium 1.7 % and phosphorus 0.5% , so it can be used as fertilizer and also can be processed into biogas, where from 3 kg of solid waste can be obtained 1.5 m3 of biogas equivalent to 1 liter of kerosene.
